Preliminary Design Phase

This is the first step of the architectural services agreement. During this phase, we conduct a thorough documentation of the existing site. We will take measurements of the existing building, or property, and take photos. Meanwhile, clients should collect images of desired solutions or designs from books, magazines, or websites. Clients should also make a list of their project goals. This phase of work typically accounts for one third / one half of our meetings, and consumes about one half of the total fees paid to the architect.

Back in our office, these ideas are put on paper. We create a preliminary plan of each floor and exterior elevations of the proposed building envelope.

Once the first set of plans are made, meeting(s) are set up with clients to discuss and “critique” the preliminary drawings. We have found this is the best approach to create solutions that suit the clients needs, and our own.
